Jeff goes towards The Light too early

Blind Canadian musician Jeff Healey has passed away. For those of you unfamiliar with his unorthodox playing style, I urge you to watch some of his live performances [Roadhouse Blues and a track with SRV]. You may also remember him from that mullet-fest Swayze movie 'Roadhouse'.

In my opinion, he peaked early as a teenage prodigy. His 1988 debut album 'See the Light' [title track live] was an electrifying breath of fresh air for blues guitar. My axe-wielding friends and I spent months picking over each riff on the album.

I remember seeing The Jeff Healey Band in the National Stadium in 1991-2. It was one of the most exciting shows I've ever attended. After the show as he chatted with fans, I managed to shake hands and grab a few quick words with the man himself (he told me never to quit playing, and I haven't!). By all accounts he was a thoroughly decent chap.

I still have an autographed ticket.

He was only 41.

So long, Jeff.
